REPUBLIC SQUARE IN ROME

Republic Square in Rome
Despite traffic, this square is one of the best examples : urban planning post 1870. Often people refer to this square calling it by its old name: Piazza Esedra, colled because it follows the form of one Naiads that was part of the Baths of Diocletian.
At the end of the 16th century, Pope Sixtus V was going to turn this exedra into an artificial lake to provide water for a navigable canal that he wanted to build between his villa and today's Piazza San Bernardo. However, this plan was never realized. At the end of 19th Century, today's Piazza della Repubblica was constructed here end it welcomes travelers arriving in Rome at the Termini station. The Fountain of the Naiads sits in the centre.
